--2nd International Students Chinese Cultural Knowledge Competition of the International Division

On the afternoon of March 30th, the Chinese Language Team hosted the 2nd International Students Chinese Cultural Knowledge Competition in Room 412 of the International Division building. The event aimed to promote excellent traditional Chinese culture, enhance cross-cultural awareness among international students, and enrich their cultural life on campus. All students of the Chinese language class participated, and some online students who were still abroad participated by creating videos on Chinese culture. During the competition, students took breaks to watch the exquisite and engaging videos made by their online peers, which allowed them to relax in the intense atmosphere and prepare for the next round of the competition.

The competition was conducted in the form of group matches, consisting of four stages: “First Bloom” individual showcase, “Dragon and Tiger Fight” group match, “Heroes Compete” ultimate round, and “Better and Better” prize. In the “First Bloom” stage, students were grouped into beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels based on their Chinese proficiency. They took turns on stage, answering questions according to their respective levels. This stage showed students’ language proficiency and cultural knowledge, allowing them to demonstrate their appreciation for Chinese culture.

The second stage was the “Dragon and Tiger Fight” group match. Each group was paired with a competitor by draw and competed head-to-head by pressing a responder to answer questions. As the stage progressed, the difficulty level increased, with each correct answer earning 200 points and each incorrect answer deducting 100 points. With a clear opponent, the students’ desire to win grew stronger, and the atmosphere in the room became more intense, leaving spectators on edge.  After this stage, the scorekeeper totaled each team’s scores from the first and second rounds to determine the top three teams that would advance to the “Heroes Compete” ultimate round. The teams were evenly matched, resulting in two groups with the same score. The tension escalated, and after a tie-breaking question, groups 1, 3, and 6 advanced to the ultimate round.

The final round, “Heroes Compete” was finally underway! All three teams that had advanced to this level took turns pressing the responder to answer questions. As expected of the students who made it this far, each team’s performance was impressive, and the competition grew more intense by the minute. As the round progressed, students from group 1 proved particularly adept at answering questions quickly and accurately, ultimately scoring 900 points and taking the lead. The other two scored 600 points each.

Finally, the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived. The zero-beginners who had only studied Chinese at the school for one month took the stage. In the bonus point round, the three finalist groups had the chance to press the responder and compete against the zero-beginners. If such zero-beginner answered correctly, the group would earn 100 points. Otherwise, they would lose 100 points. In other words, this was a game of risks and opportunities. At the beginning, group 1 ranked first and all members were cautious. But as the round progressed, they quickly seized every opportunity and pressed the responder at lightning speed. Nevertheless, the zero-beginners answered all the questions perfectly, making it clear that this round was more of a bonus than a risk.

The competition came to a close with group 1 being declared the champions, group 6 as the runners-up, and group 3 as the third place. In addition to team awards, recognition was given to individuals who demonstrated exceptional performance. From each group, one student was selected, resulting in six winners of the “Individual Excellence Award” – Jin Mincheng, Bai Jingrui, Han Zhuolin, Li Lingxiao, Zhitianliangling, and Su Yile.

The competition provided students with an opportunity to delve into the diverse cultural heritage of China, spanning five thousand years in history. The insights, experiences and knowledge gained from it would undoubtedly leave an indelible impression on all students, whether they received awards or not. It was definitely an unforgettable memory for all.
