Postdoctoral Workstation Established at No. 2 High School of ECNU

——The unveiling ceremony of the "Postdoctoral Workstation for Training Top Mathematics Talents" at the School of Mathematical Sciences of East China Normal University and No. 2 High School of ECNU grandly held

On March 14th, 2024, the unveiling ceremony of the “Postdoctoral Workstation for Training Top Mathematics Talents” at the School of Mathematical Sciences of East China Normal University and No. 2 High School of ECNU was grandly held. The forum was hosted by Wang Ping, Vice Principal of the school, with the attendance of Lu Changhong, Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences of East China Normal University, Jia Zhi, Secretary of the Party Committee, and Professor Xiong Bin, Doctoral Supervisor, and the school Principal Zhou Bin, Party Secretary Yuan Jun, Zhang Bingrong, Director of the Academic Affairs Office, Liu Chuxi, Leader of the Mathematics Teaching and Research Group, Competition Coaches Tang Lihua and Zhou Jianxin, as well as key Mathematics teachers, and students from Yau Junior Class also attended the event.

The School of Mathematical Sciences of ECNU is an important mathematical research base and talents training base with significant influence in China. In recent years, it has ranked top 100 of the global Mathematics discipline rankings in the internationally authoritative ESI global discipline rankings, and it is among the top in China. In the recent round of evaluations, the mathematical science was rated as an excellent discipline. The School has a national first level doctoral program in Mathematics and a doctoral program in Mathematics education, a Mathematics postdoctoral mobile station, a national basic science talent training and scientific research base, a key laboratory of core Mathematics and practice in Shanghai, the first batch of “overseas high-level talents’ innovation and entrepreneurship bases” in Shanghai, and several Mathematics specialized research centers.

Dean Lu Changhong mentioned in his speech that the mathematical science is regarded as the fundamental driving force for the development of national science and technology, and it is becoming increasingly important with the development of technology. The cultivation of top talents in the field of Mathematics is not only limited to universities, but also crucial for early discovery and through-type training of talents. Establishing special talent training channels for gifted children and providing more personalized training methods for different types of talents is a direction that the education industry must explore. The collaboration between East China Normal University and No. 2 High School of ECNU to establish a postdoctoral workstation for training top Mathematics talents is not only a pioneering initiative, but also a responsibility and a mission.

Principal Zhou Bin specifically mentioned in his speech that East China Normal University is the “female parent” of No. 2 High School of ECNU, and the development of No. 2 High School of ECNU cannot be separated from the deep care of the “female parent”. The strong support from the School of Mathematical Sciences this time added strength and confidence to the school! Setting up a postdoctoral workstation for training Mathematics talents in the high school is an unprecedented move. Principal Zhou Bin told the children from Yau Junior Class that a large part of the current stable GDP growth is due to the rapid development of technology, and Mathematics is an important pillar of technological development and a source of technological innovation, and building a solid foundation in Mathematics is of great significance and has a profound impact.

Later, in the presence of guests and fifty students from Yau Junior Class, the “Postdoctoral Workstation for Training Top Mathematics Talents” was unveiled! East China Normal University and No. 2 High School of ECNU have officially embarked on a new journey of jointly cultivating outstanding innovative talents in Mathematics! The workstation has hired Professor Xiong Bin as leader of the expert group. Professor Xiong Bin is a professor and doctoral supervisor at East China Normal University, Director of the Key Laboratory of Core Mathematics and Practice in Shanghai, and Director of the International Mathematical Olympiad Research Center, who is mainly engaged in teaching and research in mathematical methodology, mathematical popularization and application, mathematical problem-solving theory, mathematical education, and the discovery and cultivation of gifted students.

Principal Zhou Bin awarded Professor Xiong Bin an appointment letter. Professor Xiong Bin raised expectations for the work content of the postdoctoral workstation in his new capacity and encouraged students to devote themselves to learning about and focusing on scientific research.

After the unveiling ceremony, Professor Xiong Bin personally gave a Maths class to the students from Yau Junior Class. They showed a strong interest, actively thought and spoke up, and followed Professor Xiong Bin to explore the wonderful use of “invariants” in Mathematics.
